As early as this fall, teachers can apply for further education. As of 2015, there are 12 fewer teachers who do not specialize in mathematics, Norwegian and English.

- It shows that the development is going in the right direction. It gives students a better educational offer. At the same time, we still have work ahead of us and it will be important to prioritize teachers who must meet the competency requirements, says Education and Integration Minister Guri Melby.

Offer for teachers

From February 1, a portal / search engine for teachers who want to continue their education in the next school year will be launched. To date, since 2014, 40 teachers have benefited from the offer of additional education in a variety of subjects. 000 math teachers still do not specialize in this subject. The same is true for 7350 English teachers and 8000 Norwegian teachers.

- Teachers with solid professional competences are important to the school where students improve and learn as well as for the students themselves. That's why we continue to focus on further education. The goal is for all teachers who teach mathematics, English and Norwegian to have sufficient specialization by fall 2025, Melby says.

The government has tripled its investment in further teacher education since 2014. The application deadline for interested parties is March 1.

The situation is expected to improve in the fall

- We know that there are a lot of problems in schools right now because of Covid-19, but things are expected to improve in the fall. Therefore, it is important that municipalities develop a plan on how they can fulfill the specialization requirement. Many teachers want to complete their professional qualifications, and those who have completed further education believe that they have become better at teaching, says Melby.

From August 1, 2025, all teachers who are expected to teach English, Maths, Norwegian, Norwegian Sign Language and Sami in primary school must have a minimum of 30 credits in these subjects. Lower secondary school teachers must have at least 60 credits.

Responsibility of communes for further teacher education

Municipalities and private school owners are responsible for ensuring that teachers meet competence requirements. Last year, 5775 out of 11 candidates received bids.

Not only math, Norwegian and English

Teachers can also apply for further education in subjects other than mathematics, Norwegian and English. This applies, for example, to practical and aesthetic subjects, special education, teaching a second language and computing competences.

The offer is also intended for pre-school teachers, specialist educators and vocational teachers. As of today, the portal / search engine is also open to teachers who want to become specialist teachers, kindergarten teachers and teachers of professions.

Teacher education specialized

Teachers' specific education is aimed at teachers who wish to pursue a career as a teacher. The target group is teachers with at least 60 credits and at least three years of experience in teaching the subject or field to which pedagogical training is directed.

Better quality of the offer of kindergartens

As part of the government's drive to improve the quality of kindergarten offers, it is planned that in 2021/22, approximately 900 kindergarten teachers may undertake further education. Among other things, they can apply for further development education language and language learning for children. Pedagogical leadership and the learning environment and special education.

Occupational teachers can apply for further education at nine Colleges (UH) which last for one or two semesters and provide 15 or 30 credits. Further education is offered in one or more subject areas: pedagogical methods and vocational training, classroom management, student knowledge and supervision, and professional competence.
