Currently, the police warn hunters and shooters in advance about gun control in spring and summer. You do not have an approved gun cabinet for the safe storage of your weapons? So you have to get it now. The inspections at Nordmøre are ongoing. Now we are also starting in Romsdalen before Sunnmøre comes. If you have a firearm or are considering obtaining a firearms license, it is required that you have the firearm safely stored in an approved cabinet so that unauthorized persons cannot access it. You can read more about the requirements for storing weapons and ammunition at: politiet.no/tjenester/vapen/

Weapons inspections of private owners contribute to a greater sense of responsibility

-We experience that our gun inspections of private owners contribute to a sense of responsibility. Inspections generally create a more disciplined approach to weapons and their storage, says Liv Torild Karlsvik, head of the administrative section of the Møre og Romsdal police district. At the same time, our experience shows that most firearms, their parts and ammunition are in good order, he emphasizes.

We know that weapons that are not safely stored are easier to lose

– The police, along with serious hunters and shooters, they have a common goalso that weapons do not end up in the hands of those who are not capable of owning weapons, for example someone in a criminal environment or unstable people, says Karlsvik. We know that guns that are not stored securely are more likely to get lost.

Weapons control at their private owners. The police want to have full control of the weapons we have in our society

Violation of regulations regarding storage may be relevant to the continued licensing of weapons and/or may lead to a criminal response. If a weapon or weapon parts that are listed on the weapon card of someone we control is missing, please provide additional explanation as to where the items are located. The police want to have full control over the weapons we have in our society. In Møre og Romsdal we have almost 24 private gun owners who have received gun licenses. Divided into individuals, shooting teams and others, just over 000 weapons were registered.

People must remember that a registered firearm license can never be inherited

- In recent years, the police station has been systematically cleaning up and working on contacts with the heirs of the estates. - What people have to remember when a hunter or a shooter in the family dies is that the license for a registered firearm can never be inherited.
The heir or the new owner of the firearm must apply to the police for permission to possess it. We experience that weapons are inherited or seized by others, but no claim for seizure of weapons is made to the police. In practice, this means that the heirs or other people who seized the weapons have them illegally, explains Karlsvik. Here it must be regulated by the person who took the gun, applying to the police for permission to seize the gun.

Weapon inheritance rules, whether the heir wants to seize, seal, destroy or sell them, can be found here on our police website

Weapons that no one requests seizure should be handed over to the nearest police chief's office or police station for destruction. You always contact the police first to come to an agreement on the matter. The police want to have full control of the firearms registered on their deceased owners so that they do not fall into the wrong hands. Therefore, Karlsvik encourages spring cleaning also in this context. You can find the rules of inheritance of weapons, whether the heir wants to seize them, seal them, destroy or sell them, here on our police website. The processing time for gun applications in the Møre og Romsdal police district has now fallen to 4-6 weeks, compared to an earlier period of more than 10 weeks.

The Firearms Act gives the police the ability to control the storage of firearms in their possession, parts of firearms and ammunition

It is the Firearms Act (våpenloven § 30 siste ledd jf. Våpenforskriften § 11-6), (new rules and regulations come into force on June 01.06.21, 48) that gives the police the ability to control the storage of firearms in their possession, parts of firearms and ammunition. The police must make this known in advance in writing. The inspection of the storage by private persons shall not be carried out until at least XNUMX hours have elapsed from the time it is assumed that advance notification has been received by post.
Given both the limitations of infection control and the practicalities, we are also conducting a phone call to finally agree on a home visit, says Karlsvik. Those who come to the control will be police officers and, based on what is practical with other tasks on the day, they may be in both civilian clothes and uniforms.
