Half of all people who drive electric cars have only electric cars in their households. This is a doubling of the number of such farms in the last five years.

This is very good news for climate policy

These data appear in the annual "Elbilisten" study, conducted by the Norwegian Electric Car Association. In 2016, 26 percent replied that they only had one in their household electric cars. In 2021, this number increased to 50%.

- This very much good news for climate policy. Petrol and diesel car-free households mean households with no emissions from car use, says the secretary general of the Norwegian Electric Car Association, Christina Bu.

More and more people in Norway only own electric cars

The same study shows four out of ten only one car has electric drivers in the household.

The Norwegian Electric Car Association has been asking Norwegian electric car owners about the use of electric cars for many years, thanks to which closely follows the development of the situation. Bu believes it is important to know the facts about the use of electric cars.

“The accusation that the electric car is the second car is becoming more and more false when we see that people mostly use the electric car,” Bu says. He points out that the positive development of more and more people owning only electric cars is natural because electric cars are getting better and many new electric cars have appeared, which have a long range and additional equipment such as tow hooks. As a result, the electric car in more and more competes with petrol and diesel cars.

The share of electric cars in new car sales in Norway is around 55 percent

The Storting accepted the goal that by 2025 all new cars will be electric cars. So far this year, electric cars' share of new car sales is about 55 percent, according to data from the Information Council Road Traffic (OFV). The share of electric cars is still slightly lower in the large car segments, while the electric car dominates the smaller car market.

Norway electric car. A good argument for maintaining the purchase tax exemption for an electric car

The positive development of the use of cars in households is a good argument for maintaining the exemption of electric cars from purchase tax for some time, believes the Association Electric Cars.

– An electric car should be for everyone, and then when buying a new car you always have to pay for choosing an electric car, says Bu. He points out that many people still need to be convinced to choose an electric car in the coming years in order to achieve the goal of emission-free sales of new cars in 2025, and the tool in the form of zero VAT tax is an effective way to achieve this goal.
