In close cooperation with local authorities, IMDi is working on the settlement of evacuated Afghans. Currently, 30 different municipalities across the country are hosting 235 people. Many of these communes made their decision to accept them in a very short time.
In 2021, municipalities reported that they could settle a total of 4954 people, which is roughly the same as asked. While many municipalities said they had the capacity to accommodate more people if needed. So far, 1804 people have been settled this year. Additionally, 1179 people were applied for, of whom 1374 were displaced refugees. Therefore, there is a great desire to settle in Norwegian municipalities.
Aim for quick settlement
Most of the Afghans evacuated to Norway this year are displaced refugees who have been granted residence in the wake of NATO's withdrawal from Afghanistan. These cases were dealt with quickly and the refugees were mostly allocated to the municipalities within one to two days. The goal is for the rest of the evacuees to be settled quickly as well.
Pre-settlement mapping
Under normal circumstances, before settling, we create a map of the displaced refugee and prepare for what awaits him in Norway. The questionnaire is important because it shows the education, competences and other needs that are important when choosing a municipality. As a result, it also provides municipalities with the necessary information to facilitate good surveillance and care. For the group that has been a resident until now, this has not been possible. In such cases, the examination takes place in a given commune. For those who are now at the Oslofjord refugee center and waiting to settle, IMDi will conduct a study in collaboration with UDI.
. This awaits individual communes
Anyone admitted to the commune must be allowed to settle. Children should be provided with pre-school, school and out-of-school care. For the vast majority of adults, the induction program will be the next step on the way to work or study. Unaccompanied minors live in municipalities that can take care of the needs of this group and find suitable housing.
- We are glad that so many municipalities want to settle the evacuated refugees and that they reacted so quickly - says the director of IMDi, Libe Rieber-Mohn.
