In this way, the government will facilitate the treatment of biogas vehicles in the same way as other zero emission vehicles in cities where environmentally differentiated tariffs are possible. In the AutoPASS system it is not possible to distinguish the type of gas in the tank of different vehicles. Therefore, it has been difficult to obtain a scheme that only includes the reduced toll rates for biogas vehicles rather than natural gas. The Norwegian Public Roads Authority will now prepare a solution whereby all gas-powered vehicles weighing more than 3500 kg will be able to have a reduced rate or an exemption from payment.

Impact on greenhouse gas emissions and local air quality

- It will be up to the local authorities to adopt such a program. At the same time, we will also take a closer look at the impact that reduced gas vehicle tariffs may have on greenhouse gas emissions and local air quality, says Nygård.

The mandate for the Norwegian Public Roads Authority states that biogas is a limited resource and its use should be done in a way that reduces emissions as much as possible. Norwegian Public Roads Authority in cooperation with Norwegian Environment Agency will therefore assess the impact that reduced toll rates/exemptions for gas-powered vehicles may have on greenhouse gas emissions and local air quality.
