A driving license in Norway is very helpful, especially considering the fact that this country is one of the longest in Europe. Important information for Poles is that if we have a Polish document, we do not have to exchange it for a Norwegian one. It is valid as long as its expiration date is met. A bit different the situation looks like thiswhen we decided to live by the fjords permanently.

Polish driving license in Norway

The most common example is a situation in which a Pole working in the fjords has a permanent place of residence in his homeland. As a citizen European Union our driving license is valid throughout the European Economic Area. In this case, the Polish driving license in Norway will be respected, and the only date to remember is the expiry date stamped on the document.

When we want to live permanently

The situation becomes a bit more complicated if we make decisions about: permanent residence in Norway. Then we should exchange this document for a Norwegian one substitute. However, we must bear in mind that this condition only applies if we want to extend our rights in Norwegian offices. Because in accordance with Norwegian Ministry Regulation Communication of January 19.01.2004, XNUMX, driving licenses issued within the EEA are recognized in Norway as long as their expiry date remains valid.

Why don't we exchange the driving license in Poland?

Exchange Polish document into Norwegian in case of permanent residence in Norway is a necessity due to the law in force in Poland. Pursuant to the Act on Vehicle Drivers, a Polish driving license may be issued to a person who stays in the Republic of Poland for more than 185 days a year (we wrote about other conditions here). Therefore, when you settle permanently in the fjords, you can only extend your driving license in Norway by applying for an extension to the Statens Vegvesen. According to Norwegian regulations, we cannot do it if we have a Polish document.

To do this, we need to download the application available on the website State Highways Authority. We will also need the following attachments:

  • original driving license;
  • translation of the driving license (unless issued in English, French or German);
  • correctly taken photo;

  • registration certificate for EEA nationals.

The complete application with attachments must be submitted to the Statens Vegvesen. It is worth emphasizing that we will not have to pass any additional exams in this case. The rights we acquired in Poland are respected by Norwegian regulations.

However, for such a document to be valid also in other EU countries, we must meet the applicable criteria. The most important thing is to certify that we live on the fjords for at least 185 days in each calendar year.

  • The Polish driving license in Norway is valid as long as it is valid.
  • After the expiry date, the extension may take place in Poland - provided that we have not settled permanently by the fjords.
  • By choosing to live permanently in Norway. We should replace the Polish document with Norwegian, otherwise we will not be able to extend its validity in this country.
  • If we want to pass a driving license in Norway. We should stay in this country for at least 185 days in each calendar year - meeting this criterion, our rights will be valid throughout the EEA.
