Nine people were detained on suspicion of organized human smuggling

Nine people were detained on Thursday on suspicion of organized human smuggling. The South East Police District and Oslo Police District have long investigated suspects of involvement in organized human smuggling.

Several people have been arrested and charged

- We can confirm that several people have been arrested and are currently charged in a case of organized human smuggling. People smuggling people can mean that someone is deliberately helping a foreigner to move to a country where he or she does not have a residence permit or nationality, says the head of the Joint Aliens and Administration Unit in Torill Sorte's Southeast Police Quarter.

Nine people were detained on suspicion of organized human smuggling

Police arrested nine people earlier this week, but refused to give any more details about who it was. Some of those arrested are also suspected of staying illegally in Norway.

It cannot be ruled out that there will be more arrests

- We are now entering a new phase of the investigation in which interrogations and the control of seizures will be of the utmost importance. It cannot be ruled out that there will be more arrests in the case. It is too early to say anything about the scope. Further investigation will help map this out, Sorte says.

Human smuggling is not the same as human trafficking. Human trafficking occurs when a person, through violence, threats, abusive or other inappropriate behavior, coerces, exploits or induces someone into, for example, prostitution or forced labor.
