– Updated equipment for vocational subjects is as important as updated textbooks. The government therefore wants to increase equipment for vocational subjects. Training needs to become more tailored to professional life, says Education Minister Tonje Brenna.

He believes that modern equipment in schools will have a positive impact on students' motivation.

"We can't expect to get the skilled workers that the business community needs if the equipment students use at school comes from a completely different generation," says Brenna.

Schools across the country are getting money for new equipment

It is the county's municipalities responsible for upper secondary education and must ensure that schools are adequately equipped. A survey conducted by the Educational Association in 2020 showed that 1 in 4 teachers of vocational subjects believe that they lack the necessary equipment.

- Although the purchase of equipment is the responsibility of the poviat commune, we can see that an impulse is needed in this area. Here we have to cooperate, both the state, the district commune and the business community - says Brenna.

Schoolły and local business in one team

There are many examples across the country where schools work closely with local businesses on apprenticeship guarantees at local and industry level and on equipment.

- Acquiring well-qualified employees is a shared responsibility. We want to help establish more local and industry-specific apprenticeship guarantees. Therefore, we also invite the business community to cooperate, in which students already at school have the opportunity to use equipment used by the industry itself. In the long run, the business community will benefit from having future employees trained on updated equipment, says Brenna.
