Robert Lewandowski again received the award for the best male footballer of the year at the "The Best" Fifa gala. On the women's side, Barcelona star Alexia Putellas won.

The winners were announced at a virtual ceremony from FIFA headquarters in Zurich. The overall assessment is based on the period October 2020 to August 2021.

- It is a great honor for me to win this trophy. I feel proud and know he belongs to my teammates and coaches. We all work hard to win games, said Lewandowski.

This is the second time he has won this award. The super striker also won in the previous edition when the trophy was awarded in December 2020. As there was no (Golden Ball) award in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the FIFA Award has become the most prestigious.

A legendary record has been broken

The Pole scored 48 goals in 40 games for Bayern Munich last season. Along the way, he broke the goalscorer record of legend of forward Gerd Müller in one and the same Bundesliga season. Lewandowski stopped at 41 hits in the series.

- I have never dreamed of breaking a record. If you had asked me a few years ago to score 41 goals in 29 league games, I would have said it was impossible, said the 33-year-old.

Other FIFA footballer award finalists were Lionel Messi (Paris Saint-Germain / Barcelona) and Mohamed Salah (Liverpool).

Laureate Alexia Putellas

Alexia Putellas was absolutely crucial as Barcelona won the Spanish League and the Champions League in the 2020/21 season. As captain, she scored many goals. Achievements made her become the footballer of the year.

All the team captains from around the world and selected journalists took part in the vote. In addition, fans were able to contribute through a separate online survey.

In November, Messi was awarded the Golden Ball for the seventh time.

Other winners of the Monday awards gala:
