NAF warns drivers about the dangers of wildlife. More than 8000 animals are killed annually in accidents with wildlife on Norwegian roads. There is a lot you can do as a driver to reduce the risk of being involved in such an incident, says NAF adviser Jan Harry Svendsen.

According to surveys conducted by NAF, fear of meeting with wild animals on the road is big. And it is not at all difficult to understand. Related accidents with wild animals occur often at sunset or dusk. Now, in winter, the danger is especially great.

A deceleration of ten kilometers per hour reduces the risk of an accident in half

- Drivers themselves can do a lot to reduce the risk of collisions with wild animals. Just reducing the speed by ten kilometers per hour halves the risk of an accident, says Svendsen.

He says it is important to follow the signs and reduce speed when entering an area where there is a sign that indicates a collision hazard.

- These signs are set where there are animal paths and where there is an increased risk of hitting game. These signs should be a suggestion to reduce speed. Pets come fast, and the slightly slower speed may be the margin of safety you need to avoid a collision. Also note that some animals move in herds. If one animal shows up, chances are good that more will show up, says Svendsen.

"Pay close attention to the side of the road and look far ahead," says the NAF adviser.

NAF also recommends dimming the brightness of many screens in modern cars.

- Some screens have a night setting but this is not always good enough. Reduce the intensity to maintain better night vision.

Don't follow wild game

If you are unlucky and have had a collision with a wild animal, it is important to mark the spot and notify the police on 02800.

- If you had a collision with a wild animal that then escaped into the forest, it's important not to follow it. The animal is most likely injured and may attack. In addition, you will make it difficult for dogs to find the animal's trail later. The best thing you can do is mark the spot where the animal entered the forest, says Svendsen.

Think about your own safety

NAF also asks drivers to be careful where they stop after a collision.

- Take care of your own safety. Stop so as not to obstruct other traffic and put on a reflective vest. If the car is not roadworthy, it is important to mark the accident site with a warning triangle and move away from the car, says the NAF adviser.

- A collision or an avoidance maneuver to avoid a collision may lead to other accidents. It's easy to lose control of the vehicle and you could end up off the road or colliding with an oncoming car. This is one more reason why it is important to reduce speed in areas where there is an emergency alert.
