– Driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious road safety problem and contributes to many fatal accidents that occur on Norwegian roads. In 2020 alone, over 10 reports of driving under the influence of drugs were recorded. Many of them are under the influence of drugs other than alcohol. In particular, we know that many people are caught driving under the influence of alcohol. From March 000, we will therefore introduce sentence limits for amphetamines equivalent to 1 and 0,5 per thousand. Driving under the influence of amphetamines will be subject to the same penalties as driving under the influence of alcohol, says Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård.
Driving while under the influence of amphetamines is penalized in the same way as driving under the influence of alcohol
Od 1 March, the amendment to the regulations regarding established limits on the influence of narcotic substances or drugs other than alcohol, etc. The main change in the regulations is the introduction of permanent penalty limits for amphetamine/methamphetamine, corresponding to 0,5 and 1,2 per mille.
The background for the change is the report "Revision of the rules on the established limits for the impact of narcotic drugs or drugs other than alcohol etc.", prepared by a reference group chaired by the Oslo University Hospital at the request of the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
It is high time to equate amphetamine use with alcohol. The introduction of rigid boundaries will be good for road safety. It will contribute to the equal treatment of drivers who drive under the influence of drugs and to more efficient court proceedings, says Nygård.
The regulation shall enter into force on 1 March 2022. The regulation covers infringements committed from that date.
