The Norwegian company Scatec and its partners are in the process of building Africa's first hydrogen power plant powered by solar and wind energy. During the COP27 climate summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre attended the opening event of the first phase of the facility.
“Green hydrogen will play a key role in the transition to a low-carbon society, not least in Africa, which has great potential for affordable solar and wind energy. This facility is an example of what we need more to cut global emissions, says Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also attended the opening ceremony
The power plant in Ain Sokhna near Cairo is a joint project of Scatec, Fertiglobe, Orascom and an Egyptian sovereign investment fund. The purpose of this investment is to develop a 100-megawatt ecological hydrogen power plant. It can reduce emissions from agriculture, transport and heavy industry. When the project is fully implemented, it will be powered by a separate solar and wind power plant.
– This shows that Norwegian companies and professionals, with their knowledge and technology, can play a decisive role in the field of renewable energy in countries that need it, says Støre.
