Trondheim Municipality, Tensio and Statkraft are currently working together to make the city's energy system even smarter.

The energy-smart city of Trondheim

To provide enough electricity for new businesses and to phase out fossil energy, we need to use the energy we have more wisely. We need to reduce consumption, use sources energy other than electricity where possible, and we need to share the capacity of the distribution network. Trondheim's goal is to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, which requires us to reduce direct emissions greenhouse gas emissions through the city by 80 percent. To achieve this, we must accelerate the phase-out of fossil energy, we read in the news Trondheim commune.

It needs time

At the same time, we see that several existing enterprises are in the queue for allocation due to insufficient capacity of the power grid. Efficiency needs to be increased and at the same time we need it greater production of new and renewable energy. It needs time. This situation both hinders desired social development and slows down the green change.

This is part of the collaborative context Trondheim commune, Tensio and Statkraft to highlight the knowledge of the city's energy systems in energy analysis. This analysis will identify bottlenecks and opportunities in the city's energy system. The goal is to use available energy and transmission capacity more wisely.

Interaction between energy systems

In insight work, interdisciplinary cooperation between actors is crucial. And everyone aims to make things easier green growth in the city.

– Our forecasts indicate an increase in electricity consumption by 2030, which means an increase of 10-30%. compared to today's level in Trondheim. In some parts of Trondheim and Central Norway is already missing available production capacity, and the implementation time of our development projects is long. The situation in central Norway indicates a high demand for the production of new renewable energy, but the implementation time will also be long. Therefore, it will be particularly important to ensure good interaction between energy systems so that we can use energy as intelligently as possible in the future, says Rune Paulsen at Tensio

In Trondheim, Statkraft has been relieving pressure for over 40 years energy network, providing the city with surplus energy via the district heating network. Today, heating covers approximately 1/3 of the city's energy demand, which is especially important on the coldest days, when the load on the power grid is greatest.

– We use surplus energy from the incineration of waste, sewage and industry – energy that would otherwise be wasted, says Ove Berggård from Statkraft. In Trondheim, we laid 40 km of district heating pipes, which cover large ones parts of the city. We will continue to connect new buildings to heating network and we see the potential for even better use of the city's energy surpluses, he says.

The goal is energy-smart urban development

Energy analysis will be available to anyone who wants to use it acquired knowledge in your projects. Marianne Langedal manages the project in the municipality of Trondheim. He says the municipality's goal is to make urban development energy-smart.

– Energy analysis will become a tool to see how individual projects affect the energy system as a whole. Thanks to this, we will know what energy sources we should use and where, says Langedal. We have two good, collective renewable energy systems in the city. To meet the needs of the future, it is all about using the energy we have wisely, sums up Langedal.
