Local food producers have faced major challenges in recent years. Despite this, sales increased from 11,2 billion to 11,5 billion in 2021-2022.

On Friday, November 25, the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Sandra Borch, received a report on the sales of local food and beverages for the past year.

– Local food producers have faced significant challenges in recent years due to the social shutdown and are facing significant challenges related to growth prices and development of cross-border trade. We are pleased that despite this, sales increased, said Minister Sandra Borch during the presentation of the sales report, which took place at Helmersens Delikatesser in Tromsø.

What's new this year is the distribution of sales channels, which is different than in previous years. Drop in sales is observed in the food trade, and growth in HORECA and large households. The grocery trade is the main driver of local food sales, with a decline of 4,9 percent.

Chains have invested in local food and drink

“Several chains have invested in local food and drink. Now it is important that this investment continues, says Borch.

Northern Norway is an obvious place to sell local food in grocery stores. Although sales are down here as well. The northernmost regions, however, have the lowest decline: only 1-2 percent.

“Here, southerners can learn something from northerners! While we know that the pressure on purchasing power was somewhat less in the north, here in the north we were better at buying local food and drink than those in the south of the country, says the agriculture and food minister.
