During a meeting at the Prime Minister's residence on Tuesday, February 14, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Bill Gates discussed, among other things, global health, the green transition and the relationship between the two topics.

“Bill Gates is the world's largest private contributor to global health through his foundation and we had a good conversation about, among other things, how we can use the lessons learned from the pandemic to strengthen preparedness for future pandemics. There is a need to reform the global healthcare system and we need to mobilize both public funds and private capital, says Jonas Gahr Støre.

Norway also works with the Gates Foundation on global health initiatives

Bill Gates and Jonas Gahr Støre were among the initiators of the GAVI global vaccine alliance. It is a public-private partnership that supports the immunization of children around the world. Norway is also collaborating with the Gates Foundation on several other global health initiatives, including the World Bank Pandemic Fund and the Access to covid-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-A). As well as in the global partnership for access to vaccines, drugs and testing equipment in the context of the covid-19 pandemic.

Støre and Gates discussed the relationship between climate change and global health and the need to support new climate technologies. Together with several investors, Bill Gates founded the Breakthrough Energy coalition. The coalition will support technical innovation for net-zero emissions in electricity, transport, industry, buildings and agriculture. Jonas Gahr Støre has a leading role in the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet, which will mobilize private and public capital to ensure people in developing countries have access to reliable, sufficient and clean energy.

We need stronger and more effective partnerships

“We must follow the same mindset as the GAVI Vaccine Alliance and mobilize organizations, individual countries and private industry to support the development of renewable energy and other climate technologies. Moreover, it is important that climate technology and renewable energy are disseminated in developing countries. If we don't, we won't be able to limit global warming to 1,5 degrees. Bill Gates and I are interested in this. We need stronger and more effective partnerships that work together and we want to contribute to that, says Jonas Gahr Støre.
