New figures from Statistics Norway's population statistics show an increase in population of 15. This is the largest increase in the first quarter since 300.
“Although fertility continued to fall, the population continued to grow. In the first quarter, we exceeded 5,5 million, partly due to the increase in the number of Ukrainian citizens, says adviser Magnus Haug from SSB.
Net immigration, i.e. immigration minus emigration, was the highest in the first quarter since Statistics Norway began publishing such figures in 1997. 20 immigration and 900 emigration equaled net immigration of 6300.
Out of 20,9 thousand people who moved to Norway in the first quarter, 7,7 thous. were citizens of Ukraine.

The fertility rate is very low
In addition to migration to or from the country, the number of births and deaths also affects the growth of the country's population. In the first quarter, the surplus of births, births minus deaths, was 760. This is the lowest surplus of births in the first quarter in the history of the Norwegian Statistical Office. This is largely due to the constantly falling birth rate.
Fertility in Norway is falling from 2009, except 2021. Development also continued in early 2023. 12 babies were born, compared to 300 in the same quarter last year.
– Apart from the exceptional year 2021, women in all age groups from 20 to 40 have given birth in the last ten years less and less kids. There are no major changes from year to year, but a steady decline, says Magnus Haug.
