- The new education law is a historic extension of students' rights. They get the right to study at upper secondary level until they actually finish school, the right to change the curriculum if they change their mind, and the possibility to get more vocational certificates, says Education Minister Tonje Brenna.
The aim of the new Education Act was to thoroughly assess how the education sector should be governed and what national legislation is needed. In addition, the goal was to make the law as clear and transparent as possible so that everyone could understand and find it.
Today's law on the education system is 25 years old and has been amended almost every year since its adoption. Therefore, there was a need for a comprehensive review of the law.
The work took several years and the ministry assessed more than a thousand inputs, organized information meetings and dialogue with both students and other key actors in the sector.
It will apply from August 2024
Many of the principles contained in the current law on the education system are continued in the new law. In addition, new rules and clarifications are proposed.
The Ministry of Education entrusted the Education Directorate with the task of preparing regulations for the new Act on education system and regulations regarding changes in the Act on non-public schools. They will be sent for consultation.
The new law on the education system along with the regulations is to come into force in August 2024.
