As we read on the website of the Trondheim commune, 12 out of 15 nurses are employed in the commune after completing an internship program.
– The internship program is an excellent opportunity to learn about the health services provided by the commune. That's what Susanne Martinsen, a nurse in the Department of Mental Health, says Addictions, who recently completed an internship program in the commune.
The first group of trainees has already completed their training. When the program began in September 2021, 15 nurses participated in the program. After completing the internship, twelve of them received permanent employment in the commune.
Successful recruitment initiative
– This is an important and successful recruitment initiative, says municipal nurse Gørill Tranås. The lack of nurses is a big challenge for the health system throughout the country, as well as in the commune Trondheim it is difficult to find enough candidates for positions.
– Thanks to the internship program, we hope that we have found an effective one method recruiting and retaining nurses and therapists, says Tranås. For two years a person participating in the internship program has the opportunity to work in four different positions in the commune. This allows you to see the variety and scope health services in the commune, at the same time under the supervision of a mentor at each workplace.
– When you're not sure where you want to work, trying different jobs is a good idea a good solutionto find out what you really want, says Susanne Martinsen.
A great way to enter professional life
Susanne worked in domestic service for 6 months health care, a health and social services center, and the last 6 months in the Mental Health and Addiction Services Department, where he now has permanent employment. She joined the program right out of nursing school and thinks it's a great way to transition from student to professional life.
Both Susanne Martinsen and Rattiya Berge emphasize that moving to different workplaces, experience a steep learning curve. When you start to feel comfortable in one place and get to know the job and your colleagues, you need to move somewhere else. At the same time, it is also exciting and rewarding.
– There was a lot to learn, but we did well. We realize that we are becoming more and more prepared for challenges, they both say.
Rattiya Berge is a permanent employee in the addictions department at the Tiller Health and Human Services Center. Unit manager Lars Gil is very pleased with the reception of Rattiya and the program, which has a good chance of success.
The aim of the internship program is to increase employment
Interns are well educated and have a generally positive attitude. Because they visit different workplaces, they gain more knowledge about various units of the commune than many other employees. All departments can benefit from this cooperation, as well as therapists.
Mette Sund works in the Human Resources Department and is responsible for the internship project. Informs you that the overall goal of the internship program is increasing employment, improving qualifications and presenting the commune as an attractive workplace for nurses and therapists.
It was also decided to expand the internship program to include therapists from 2022. From the second pool of interns, 8 nurses and 2 therapists were employed, and from the third pool, 7 nurses and 13 therapists were employed. They started work on September 1, 2023. All were hired full-time.
There are also 22 days of competences during the internship period. These days include issues related to the profession, legal regulations and increasing competences in the field of internal cooperation in the commune and with specialized health services. As project manager, Mette Sund maintains close contact with the interns and workplaces throughout the program.
