This week, the world's largest warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, will enter the Oslofjorden for a visit to Oslo. A military exclusion zone will be established around the ship and in the mooring area.

This visit provides the Norwegian Armed Forces with a unique opportunity to further develop closer cooperation with our most important ally, the United States. Several exercises are also planned, including army, navy, air force and Norwegian special forces.

Note: For security reasons, we cannot provide details at this time of when the aircraft carrier will arrive, where it will be, or how long it will stay.

Restrictions and Prohibited Areas

When entering and exiting Oslo fjord military ships and guards will maintain security and ensure that no one comes near the aircraft carrier. Military reserved areas are established. This is to ensure the safety of both the aircraft carrier and the public.

  • Boat operators must be within 500 meters of the aircraft carrier when entering and exiting.
  • Where it is not possible to maintain a distance of 500 meters, the public must not be between the aircraft carrier and the escorting ships and boats.
  • At anchor, the distance to the aircraft carrier is 1000 meters.
  • Restricted areas in the air are up to 3000 feet.
  • The no-go zone in Søndre Akershuskaia is clearly marked.

The armed forces will enforce the prohibited areas. Military guards will expel unauthorized persons. Violations will be reported to the police.

In connection with the visit, several thousand American soldiers will also be staying in Oslo.

As the USS Gerald R. Ford is a nuclear reactor powered ship, the Radiation Protection and Nuclear Preparedness Directorate (DSA) was involved in the preparations for the visit with the Norwegian Armed Forces and other relevant emergency response actors.

That's why it's important

Norway and the United States have long-standing and close defense cooperation. It is in Norway's interest that allies exercise and operate with us in our areas. USS Gerald R. Ford visits Oslo, will continue sailing in Norway and nearby Norwegian areas.

Norway's defense relies on NATO's collective security and relations with close allies, as well as on national defense capabilities. Close defense cooperation with the US has been important to Norway for over 70 years. The visit is an important signal for close bilateral relations and enhances the credibility of collective defense and deterrence.

The aircraft carrier is named after President Gerald R. Ford, who also served in the Navy during World War II on the aircraft carrier USS Monterey. The ship entered service on July 22, 2017. There are over 4500 crew and over 90 aircraft and helicopters on board. The ship is 333 m long and 76 m high.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is also the largest warship ever built anywhere in the world, costing $13 billion to build.
