Today I write about the joint commentary of Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland Norwegian government website in the press release.
– A free and serious media is absolutely essential for our democracy. That's why we support a new EU initiative to strengthen media freedom and diversity across Europe, says Culture and Equality Minister Anette Trettebergstuen.
In a joint comment, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland support the European Commission's proposal for a European Media Freedom Act. The countries collectively emphasize the need for increased protection of editor-controlled media content on very large technology platforms.
“Editor-controlled media is one of our most important weapons against disinformation, lies and factual errors. They cannot fulfill their social mission if the tech giants remove or change the content they post. Therefore, we emphasize that there must be better dialogue procedures between editor-controlled media and tech giants. Among other things, media controlled by editors must be able to oppose the removal of their own content before this happens, says the Minister of Culture and Equality.
