The last few days have abounded in incidents proving that man often turns out to be helpless in the face of the power of nature and the elements. Fortunately, not always. The fire at the Gdańsk refinery was quickly contained. The amount of bacteria in the Bay of Gdańsk, which received a significant amount of sewage last week, most likely does not pose a threat to humans. An exceptionally positive accent, with which we are starting the week, is the planned award of cardinal dignity to the first Pole, who exemplarily shows how the institution of the Church should function.

A Pole is a cardinal
The news was announced by the Pope during a meeting with the faithful on Sunday. Archbishop Konrad Krajewski is the first Pole whom Pope Francis intends to appoint as a cardinal. The clergyman won the favor of the head of the Church and the respect of the community through his charity work. He gave his official apartment to refugees from Syria, staying in the office himself. Krajewski is also famous for financially supporting Italian families and helping homeless people. Among other things, creating a hairdressing and medical point for them and arranging showers under the colonnade in St. Peter. In addition, in the winter of 2016, which turned out to be extremely harsh for Italian climatic conditions, he would leave his car open and invite homeless people to warm up inside. Krajewski is, inter alia, the organizer of the great Christmas lottery, the entire income of which goes to the poor. The archbishop considers his actions to be natural, explaining that helping his neighbor is the duty of every good Christian, and sharing with other people is a superior duty of the Church.
Fire at the refinery in Gdańsk
On Sunday morning, a fire broke out in the Gdańsk refinery of Grupa Lotos, which was caused by the seizure of the pump pumping fuel between the tanks. The fire was extinguished by six Lotos fire brigades as well as ten teams from the State Fire Service. Although the situation looked extremely dangerous, the fire was brought under control. As the threat has passed, the refinery workers are working smoothly today.
Just a few days ago, on May 17, a huge fire consumed a store in Międzyzdroje. The fire was spreading at an alarming rate, all most likely due to… a cigarette butt. When the firefighters arrived, the roof structure was already occupied, making it impossible to extinguish the fire from inside. The action lasted six hours - luckily no one was hurt. Firefighters ask you to be especially careful when handling flammable materials and not to leave any smoldering fires or cigarette butts, which only seemingly seem harmless.
Sewage in the Bay of Gdańsk
On Tuesday, a sewage pumping station failed in Ołowianka. In order to avoid flooding in Gdańsk, sewage was discharged into Motława between 15th and 18th May. They ended up in the waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk. Although the water samples collected on Wednesday showed no E. coli bacteria, be aware of the dangers and avoid bathing. Even if the water taken from the Gdańsk Bay met the sanitary requirements, it does not mean that now - a few days later - it is still clean.
