Important action for safety
As emphasized by Erik G. Tangen, senior inspector of the Public Road Administration in Norway, the whole action was of great importance for road safety. It took place in the evening and more than 1000 cars out of 5000 that were using the E6 road at that time were taken for detailed inspection. According to official information, 131 heavy goods vehicles were also inspected.
Control effects
Inspectors emphasize that most of the inspections were carried out without any comments. This is due to the high awareness of Norwegians regarding compliance with road traffic regulations. However, there were some shortcomings, including the following:
- two drivers were underneath under the influence of alcohol
- one driver was forbidden to drive a car on highways
- 15 vehicles did not meet the technical requirements
- 3 cars were in such a bad technical condition that they were forbidden to move until the defects were removed
- 12 trucks did not meet the technical requirements, including exceeding exhaust emissions, defects in the braking system, etc.
- 10 trucks were overloaded
- 5 cars were running on studded tires
- 2 people were detained on drug possession charges
Overall, the safety level can be considered high - in total, all irregularities concerned approximately 5 percent of all road traffic. However, the campaign clearly showed that raising awareness is still important Norwegians in the field of road traffic codes.
