Twenty years already

The care allowance has a twenty-year history. Its aim is to provide support to those families who have not decided to place their child in kindergarten. It is mainly used by immigrant families, because Norwegians, as a rule, prefer to return to work than to look after their pupils.

Not everyone supports, they are "for"

From the very beginning of the introduction of the care allowance, it has been controversial. Opponents mainly argue that this benefit does not solve the problems of immigrant women on the labor market, but only deepens them. Additionally, many politicians do not like the possibility payment of this benefit women who in practice live outside Norway. Official data shows that 60% of such cases concern Polish women who usually stay in Poland. There are currently 555 families.

From August 1, significant changes were made to the granting of this benefit. The rates that regulate the amount of the benefit were differentiated depending on how long the child has been in kindergarten. If they do not attend this type of institution at all, their parents will continue to receive NOK 7500. Parents whose child stays in kindergarten for no more than 6000 hours a week can count on NOK 8. Guardians who send their child to kindergarten for no more than 16 hours a week will be able to count on NOK 4500, and if it is not more than 24 hours, the allowance will be NOK 3000. If the child is sent for less than 32 hours a week, the parents will receive support in the amount of NOK 1500.

The prime minister supports the granting of the allowance

Recently, Prime Minister Erna Solberg has opted for the continuation of this benefit. In her opinion, it is not the care allowance that causes the situation in which immigrant women stay at home instead of taking up work. Not all members of her party - Høyre - support this position. Politicians from Venstre, Ap and SV are also in favor of abolishing the benefit.
