As NAV observes, it is worth applying for parental benefit within a certain period. The Office must have sufficient time to consider it. This is crucial for starting your benefit payment.
Application for parental benefit - what first?
In order to estimate the amount of parental benefit, NAV must obtain information about the income and employment of both the father and mother of the child. It is equally important that you provide a certificate from your doctor or midwife about your due date. This document must be issued at or after the 26th week of pregnancy.

deadlines
The application for parental benefit should be submitted in good time. The period of time it takes to process your application varies between depending on the municipalitywhere you live. It is worth getting acquainted with them, because if, for example, a given NAV branch needs 9 weeks, the obligation to submit the necessary documents expires 9 weeks before the planned start of receiving this benefit.

IMPORTANT! NAV provides for the possibility of withdrawing funds up to 3 months back. However, if you submitted the application, e.g. 2 weeks after the birth of your child, and a given NAV branch has 9 weeks to consider it, there is a risk that the benefit for the first week will not be paid at all.
Parental allowance for the father
The application for parental benefit must be submitted together with the information on the father's income, even if the mother has only earned a one-off income. NAV also reminds you to start paternity leave after the 6-week period only for the mother. All this to take full advantage of the period due.

You can take paternity leave later
Paternity leave can be used at a later date. However, for this you must submit an application for a benefit deferral. This should also be done within a clearly defined deadline. It falls on the last day of the applicable joint period. The exact date of this date is included in the decision on granting parental benefit received by the child's mother. It is important to observe this deadline, because, for example, being late with the application by 5 days means that NAV will no longer pay the benefit for this period.

Parental benefit and part-time job
Norwegian law allows you to work part-time during parental benefit. In this case, you should try to recalculate the amount of the benefit. However, it is obligatory to submit an appropriate application before starting work. Failure to meet this deadline may result in NAV requesting reimbursement of the benefits paid while the work was performed.

Application for parental benefit - keep an eye on the deadlines
The deadlines for applying for benefits in Norway are very important. The same applies to any changes to the timing of the payment of this benefit. If, for example, you plan to postpone the payment of paternity leave due to the entitlement to annual leave, the necessary documents must be submitted before it begins. Otherwise, NAV may claim unjustly paid funds.
