Sharp criticism of the Auditor General

The audit carried out by the Norwegian Supreme Audit Office, i.e. the Office of the Auditor General, revealed many shortcomings in the matter of maintaining the safety of employees on the Norwegian continental shelf. Auditor General Per-Kristian Foss strongly criticizes the work of the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority. He believes that their methods are far from their prevailing responsibilities.

What does the report say?

On Tuesday, the Norwegian parliament received an audit report from the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority, made by the Office of the Auditor General. What will we find in the report? It turns out that the work of the Oil Supervision Authority that has been performed in recent years is not well received. The auditors write:

  • The Office should not issue a license to use the controversial Goliat platform,
  • The Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority does not reveal any serious safety issues,
  • The Office does not react when it should do so.

The first point is about the Goliath platform, which caused a lot of problems before coming to Norway. Auditor General Per-Kristian Foss believes that approval to start Goliath's work should be carefully checked by the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Authority before approval is given. Goliath comes from South Korea and its original construction cost was 31 billions of crowns. Currently, Fr. 16 billion crowns more, and three people have already died during its construction, and as many as "undesirable incidents" have been reported 34!

A dramatic picture of Norwegian oil activities

Tuesday report, showing quality work on the Norwegian continental shelf is a dramatic picture of Norway petroleum activities. Bellona representative Frederic Hauge says this is the worst report they have ever received. The biggest scandal is allowing Goliath to work when the platform is not in the best condition and threatens the safety of many employees. What is also blatant is the fact that sensitive areas are receiving new licenses for oil extraction, while at the same time the negligence of the administration and the entire management is visible.
