Soon, the largest European exporter of natural gas in Europe, which is Norway, will supply gas to Poland.

Norwegian gas in Poland

Norway is the largest European exporter of natural gas, supplying it to many places. It turns out that Central and Eastern Europe needs the amount of gas that Norway can supply to other countries. Many people are surprised that these two points on the map did not have common gas pipelines for so long. Fortunately, however, it will soon change because on October 1, 2022, the Baltic Pipe will be built.

Baltic Pipes

The Baltic Pipe is going to be built on October 1, 2022 and will be a gas connection located on the Norwegian shelf running through Denmark to Poland. The gas pipeline will transport very large amounts of Norwegian gas to Poland, as it will be 10 billion cubic meters per year. The decision to invest in this project was made by Gaz-System i Energinet on November 30. Gasco and Energinet, on the other hand, decided that the Baltic Pipe will be connected to the Norwegian transmission system.

Implementation of plans

Already in 2017, plans and research for a new gas connection were started, thanks to which Poland will be supplied with Norwegian gas. In 2018, the route of the gas pipeline was established, and the results of environmental research convinced investors that the project was profitable and economically advantageous. The construction of the new connection should start in 2020.

The end of the Polish-Danish dispute

The governments of Poland, Norway and Denmark have signed agreements that regulate the legal route of the gas pipeline, which is the end of the Polish-Danish dispute. The dispute lasted 40 years and concerned the boundaries of the excluded economic zones in the Baltic Sea. For Poland has a gas connection with Norway with proven suppliers on the Norwegian Continental Shelf is a key element of the gas supply diversification strategy. This means only one thing: the independence of the dominant supply from the east and a gradual transition to a low-emission economy. Baltic Pipe also has broader plans because the plan includes connections between Poland and Slovakia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Ukraine.

Only advantages

Baltic Pipe will occupy a central place as the largest Polish gas supplier in PGNiG's strategy. The company has been present on the Norwegian continental shelf for over 10 years and does not intend to slow down the pace of its development. The gas pipeline will provide Poland with economic benefits and energy security with lower emissions. The project of building a new gas connection was also supported by the European Commission, as they see it as an opportunity to have a positive impact on the climate.

The construction of a new gas connection between Norway and Poland will provide 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually. Read about the Baltic Pipe construction plans in the article above!
