Hornets in Norway - when did they appear?

The first hornets were observed in Norway in 2007. Since then, these insects have been spreading almost rapidly in some parts of the country. However, this is not their debut in this region of the world. They returned after 100 years of absence from the country.

Most hornets appear in:

  • Østfold,
  • Akershus,
  • hedmark,
  • buskerud,
  • Westfold.

According to scientists, hornets will also appear in the southern part of the country.

Hornets in Norway - is there anything to be afraid of?

Have you spotted a hornet? Do you have cause for concern? It turns out that it is not - the hornets, despite their size, are gentle and calm.

“Jeśli jednak go zranisz, włożysz rękę do gniazda, nadepniesz lub przyciśniesz – możesz poczuć naprawdę bolesne użądlenie,” – ostrzega Flåten w rozmowie z Nettavisen.

Hornets - a dangerous pest or good for the ecosystem?

There is no clear answer to this question. On the one hand, hornets can do a lot of damage: they bite and damage fruit and young trees, causing damage to forestry and horticulture. On the other hand, they are also needed in nature: they kill sick and weak insects, preventing the spread of diseases, and destroy crop pests.
