The government is changing controversial rules for quarantine hotels. Now travelers to Norway can spend their quarantine time outside of the hotel if you are in the right place.

This was said by Justice Minister Monica Mæland (H) at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Until now, everyone who does not live in Norway or owns a home in Norway has had to spend the quarantine period in hotels with a few exceptions.

- Some laws are perceived as unfair. Therefore, I am glad that we can make some changes, 'said Mæland.

– The main rule remains that travelers to Norway must stay in quarantine hotels, but exceptions have been introduced for people renting an apartment in Norway. In addition, people who do not own or rent an apartment can stay in a suitable place. If they document that the quarantine rules can be complied with, continues the Minister of Justice.

A separate room is not enough

However, it is not enough to accommodate foreign girls or families in a separate guest room.

- Seclusion is required, you must provide a private room. Such a person should have access to their own toilet, kitchen or catering facility. It must also be possible to avoid close contacts, says Mæland.

People in the same household who travel together to Norway may be quarantined at the same place of residence.

The changes will take effect as soon as possible

The changes will be sent for consultation in the afternoon and will be implemented as soon as possible, no later than the weekend.

According to Mæland, a separate form will be prepared to document that the place where you intend to stay is suitable.

Information on the rules for entering Norway will be sent through several channels. Among other things, SMSes will be sent to foreign mobile phones in Norway in their own language. SMSes will also be sent to Norwegian mobile phones abroad.

According to the Minister of Health, there is no point in easing quarantine policy during the holiday season.

- Those who celebrate Christmas with their family abroad must be quarantined. Those who come to celebrate Christmas also need to be quarantined. This could prevent a new wave in the new year, says Bent Høie (H).

Registration of travelers

From New Year on, the government will register anyone who enters Norway. A digital registration system will be introduced. Norwegian citizens also need to register in the system. The aim of the system is to improve control.

- You can wait for a check if you break the quarantine rules. If you break the quarantine rules, you could face a hefty fine, says Mæland.

The Minister of Justice emphasizes that anyone who comes from countries with high levels of infection must be quarantined, whether it is in a quarantine hotel or some other suitable location.

24 corona infections were registered in Norway in the last 460 hours. This is 80 more than the day before and 19 more than on the same day last week.
