- These are important changes that lead to less bureaucracy. Municipal officials will be relieved and people will have more freedom to build on their own property, says Nikolai Astrup, minister for Local Government and Modernization.

Changes in regulations from May 1, 2021

The government has made changes to the regulations which means that you can build terraces and small outbuildings on your own property. All this without having to apply for a permit from the municipality. It will also be possible to erect a terrace up to 1 meter high with railings 1,2 m high without submitting applications and smaller extensions up to 15 square meters, which can be used as a year-round apartment.

It is important to check what regulations the commune has

The person who wants to build is responsible for whether the terrace, its extension or extension will comply with the regulations. Among other things, it is important to check the regulations of the commune in which you live before starting construction.

There are still some requirements

- There are still some requirements that are made, even if you do not have to submit an application to the municipality: the terrace must be connected to the building and not protrude more than 4 meters from the facade of the building, says Nikolai Astrup.

It should also be remembered that the distance from the terrace to the neighbor's border must be at least 1 meter.
