New Zealand surprised with a somewhat controversial idea. By 2025, it is to introduce a complete ban on smoking. Future generations will probably not have the opportunity or way to legally buy tobacco. What do we know more? How will these changes be implemented?

Smoking Ban New Zealand - How Will It Change?

Tobacco is to be phased out gradually. In small steps. The changes are to be implemented in several stages:

  • gradual increase in the age to buy tobacco,
  • reduction of the permissible level of nicotine in tobacco products,
  • prohibition of using filters that are not biodegradable,
  • introducing a minimum price for cigarettes,
  • limited list of places where tobacco can be purchased.

How did you come to that?

The changes that are to come into force are quite radical, but not without reason. The government has confirmed that the purpose of such modifications is to prevent cancer, not to combat it. Will this path be effective?

“As more and more cigarettes smoke, the risk of disease and premature death increases. Smoking is the cause of a quarter of cancer deaths. According to the Cancer Society, smoking is the leading cause of death for New Zealand Maori people. The New Zealand Cancer Society welcomed the ban proposal. They found that six stores could buy tobacco during the 10-minute walk. This shows the scale of access to this type of products. " (source of information: https://swiatoze.pl/).

First of all, concern for the health of citizens and the environment ...

New Zealand is committed to caring for the health of its citizens. Ecological aspects are also important. According to the latest data, one non-cigarette in just one day is able to emit the equivalent of up to 14 percent of the nicotine released by cigarette smoke. In addition, experts point out that cigarettes, new brands and those already on the market - are tested on animals. However, opponents of such changes emphasize that such radical steps are not a good solution - it is an attack on civil freedom and the possibility of making a choice.
