Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre takes over the leadership of the international high-level panel on sustainable maritime affairs.
- Norway is a pioneer in maritime governance. The ocean panel represents the important work that Norway has started on the sustainable management of the world's oceans. We, along with our partners, must ensure that it becomes a reality, says Støre.
The important role of the sea in climate work to reduce emissions
The maritime panel countries are committed to sustainable management of 100 percent of their maritime and coastal areas by 2025. Within five years, nearly 40 percent of the world's coastlines and 30 percent of Exclusive Economic Zones will be subject to comprehensive management plans.
The panel also looks at the important role of the sea in climate work to reduce emissions and will use COP26 to put this on the agenda.
– There is the sea common good and is of great importance for health people and the planet, for the climate and food security, for local jobs and for the global economy. That the sea continues to provide the services we so depend on. We need to keep the sea fresh and clean, Støre emphasizes.
The Maritime Panel is made up of the incumbent heads of state and government from 14 countries. Since its inception in 2018, it has been chaired by the Prime Minister of Norway together with President Palau.
- The countries in the maritime panel are in the process of ensuring the sustainable management of our maritime areas, but there is no doubt that reaching the goal will require. In Glasgow, we will work to ensure that we take advantage of the opportunities offered by the sea in our climate work. And it's important that more coastal states join in, says Støre.

First agreement at the ongoing COP26 climate summit in Glasgow
The first agreement is already reached at the ongoing COP26 climate summit in Glasgow. It was joined by the leaders of over 100 countries, including: Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Canada, Russia, China, Indonesia and Colombia, all key countries to stop deforestation.
The agreement provides for assistance to developing countries in halting and reversing the deforestation process. More than £ 14 billion will be allocated for this purpose.
