Norway is one of 10 countries recommended by Lonely Planet as a 2022 travel destination. The award places particular emphasis on countries that have a sustainable travel experience where tourists have a positive impact on the places they visit.

At the very top, one of the smallest countries in the world reigns, the Cook Islands. Norway is number two and Mauritius is number three. Only 10 out of 195 countries in the world are on the list. This is the 17th year in a row that Lonely Planet has shared its collection with top travel destinations.

- Tourism based on agriculture and reindeer breeding provides tourists with an authentic experience rooted in the places and regions they visit. So it is an important factor in contributing to more sustainable tourism, says Agriculture and Food Minister Sandra Borch.

The Hurdal platform promotes sustainable tourism

On the Hurdal platform, the government announces that a national plan for the tourism industry will be developed, with a focus on sustainability. A separate pilot program for sustainable tourism will be launched. It supports local nature and environmental management and zero-emissions travel to and from places in Norway.

Sustainable Tourism is work geared towards offering unique experiences based on local identity, culture, history, resources and cultural heritage. At the same time, efforts should be made to limit the negative effects of tourism.

- Tourists are increasingly demanding sustainable tourism products. They want more variety of cultural content, food and drink. They want tourism that works in cooperation with local forces and works in local communities, says Minister of Agriculture and Food Sandra Borch.

- We have smaller and niche travel companies here that can provide people with plenty of space, personal hospitality, family experiences as well as local traditional food, says Borch.

Norway's Tourism Strategy is a curriculum at Harvard

National Norway's tourism strategy is now a compulsory curriculum at America's elite Harvard University.

The Norwegian Tourism Strategy, which was presented to the Ministry of Trade and Industry in May this year, is on the list of study programs at Harvard for graduate students Pursuing Sustainability in the Travel & Tourism Sector . Harvard believes this strategy is a good example of how a placement can take a strategic approach to sustainability. Harvard students come from all over the world. The aim is to urge the tourism industry to accelerate its work towards sustainable development and the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

A brand for sustainable placements

Innovation Norway has its own brand for sustainable travel destinations. The badge can be awarded to a local or regional destination or company in close cooperation with the municipality and local businesses.

Topics such as nature, environmental and climate impact, the interaction between tourism and local communities, and the creation of local economic value by industry are key to understanding sustainable tourism.

So far, 21 places across the country have received the Sustainable Places Mark.
