From Monday, unvaccinated Austrians must stay at home, unless they are going to work, to the doctor or to the shop, the country's government decided on Sunday.

A national shutdown for the unvaccinated was announced by Prime Minister Alexander Schallenberg at a press conference on Friday. The draft was approved by the government on Sunday.

The closure goes into effect on Monday and means unvaccinated people can only leave their homes when they go to work, see a doctor or buy essentials. You can also go outside to breathe some fresh air.

Children under 12 are exempt from these rules.

Penalty

The government also decided that random checks would be carried out to verify that the rules were being complied with. Breaches of this rule can be fined up to € 1450, which is almost NOK 14500.

Prime Minister Schallenberg stated that the state may introduce even stricter restrictions if necessary.

He says the decision to close the unvaccinated was not easy.

. Infection records

Only 65 percent of the country's population is vaccinated. At the same time, new records of infection are made almost every day. More than 13 new cases of infection were registered in the country on Sunday.

In the past seven days, the level of infection has been as high as 814,6 cases per 100 inhabitants.

The closure will initially last ten days and will affect approximately two million inhabitants.
