Norway has negotiated a 2022 fisheries agreement with the EU and the UK. The cod quota will also remain at a record low next year.
A trilateral agreement was signed on Friday on the management of shared stocks in the North Sea - informs the Ministry of Trade and Industry .
- Sustainable management of resources in the North Sea depends on total quotas agreed by Norway, the EU and the UK. This agreement lays the groundwork for bilateral agreements, and I am very pleased that we have reached an agreement. Minister for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Bjørnar Skjæran said in a statement.
Some quotas have increased compared to last year, while others have been reduced.
The total herring quota will increase by 20%. compared to 2021, and the total saithe quota will decrease by 24%.
The cod quota has been set at the same level as in 2021, thus it will remain at a record low level also next year.
- I understand that 2022 will be a challenging new year for Norwegian fishermen. Unfortunately, it is very important to look after the cod stocks in the North Sea, says Skjæran.
