The president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, has ordered the arrest of unvaccinated people who refuse to stay at home.

The government of the Philippines this week tightened covid restrictions in the capital, Manila, and several other provinces and cities. People who had not been vaccinated against the coronavirus were ordered to stay at home.

Health authorities believe the infection will continue to increase in the days to come. President Duterte on Wednesday ordered local authorities to isolate the unvaccinated even where there are no restrictions. He ordered them to stay at home.

- If they still leave the house, they may be detained in their homes. If they refuse, the police may arrest them, Duterte said.

Vaccination against the coronavirus in the Philippines is voluntary, and so far less than half of the more than 100 million people living there have been fully vaccinated.
