The new European Parliament inquiry committee investigating the use of Pegasus and other spyware held its first meeting on Tuesday. During the meeting, a chairman and three vice-chairmen were elected.

A new commission is to investigate the use of Pegasus and other equivalent spyware. The first inaugural meeting was held on April 19. MEPs elected MEPs to lead the committee's work:

  • Chair: Jeroen Lenaers (EPP, The Netherlands)
  • First Vice-Chair: Sándor Rónai (S&D, HU)
  • XNUMXnd Vice-Chair: Diana Riba and Giner (Zieloni / EFA, ES)
  • Third Vice-Chair: Moritz Körner (Renewal, Germany)

During this first committee meeting, Members also heard the experts' views. They presented their research on Pegasus and other equivalent spyware.

Alleged use of Pegasus spyware

Following the alleged use of Pegasus spyware against journalists, politicians, law enforcement officials, diplomats, lawyers, businessmen, civil society activists and other citizens, the European Parliament decided in March to set up a new committee of inquiry. The aim is to investigate the use of this software and other surveillance spyware and whether such use violates EU law and fundamental rights. The final report by the Commission is planned to be submitted after 12 months.
