The holiday in Norway for an employee is at least 25 working days in one calendar year. However, if you are over 60, you are entitled to an additional week of holiday leave. It is also worth knowing how the working days in Norway are defined, and therefore how many calendar days in a year you can rest.

Vacation in Norway - working days

Norwegian labor law does not include public holidays and Sundays up to working days. Therefore, as a rule, a working week consists of six days, including Saturday. The holiday in Norway for an employee is therefore exactly four calendar weeks and one day. It is worth remembering that this is assuming that during this period there are no public holidays and non-working days. In practice, the holiday period may be extended even further.

Determining the vacation leave

It is generally accepted practice in Norway that the employer is obliged to agree a vacation schedule with the employee in advance. However, if a shop steward is employed at the workplace, then he is responsible for all leave arrangements. If no agreement is reached in this respect, the employer has the final say. Except for the holiday period (i.e. from June 1 to September 30), during which the employee is entitled to three consecutive weeks of holiday leave.

Vacation in Norway - special conditions

It is worth remembering that although it is the employer who ultimately decides on the vacation schedule in Norway, the employee must be informed at least two months before he can go on vacation. If you fall ill during your vacation and have a sick leave, you have the right to postpone the days of unused vacation to another period of the year. The necessary condition is to submit your request as soon as possible after returning to work.

Leave allowance - holidays

A holiday in Norway for an employee is inherently related to the benefit, the so-called "Feriepenger". It is 10,2% of the salary you received last year. It is worth remembering that after the age of 60, the amount of the holidaypenger increases to 12,5% of the salary. As a rule, this benefit is paid when the last payment is made before the holiday. Although this may vary depending on the workplace - read more about feriepenger in this article >>>
