Drammen will become the best cycling municipality in Norway. As part of this initiative, three bicycle routes on Strømsø are to be modernized and more are planned.
According to the information, politicians adopted a cycling plan in autumn 2021 to make Drammen a greener commune. The decision states that all bicycle lanes in the Drammen municipality will have red asphalt.
This change will happen over time and the bike lanes are tarmaced when there is a need for repair or when new bike lanes are to be built. This summer, it is the turn of three routes. Marienlyst, Bikkjestykket and from Rundtom to Gyldenløves plass.
Red only for cyclists
The reason why bike lanes should be red is because there is a clearer distinction between road, sidewalk and bike lane. Red color is a signal to drivers that - do not drive here. Thanks to this solution, the safety of cyclists is strengthened. It will also be safer for pedestrians when cyclists and pedestrians have separate lanes.

- We know that it is easier for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to stick to their lane when there is visual separation between the lanes, says Senior Engineer Elisabeth Bjørnstad von Enzberg-Viker from Transport, Road and Park Management.
– As part of achieving a comprehensive bicycle network in the city Three are being modernized in Drammen episodes, with more on the way. In the 90s, some of these routes were asphalted, and now it's time to make them safe and pleasant to travel, says Enzberg-Viker.
Marienlyst
The area between Drammenshallen and the center of Strømsø will have red asphalt. The cycle path continues past Drammenshallen and on to Drammensbadet and on to Strømsø Square.
Bikekjestykket
Bikkjestykket - from Austad to Marienlyst will be a modernization of the old red and gray asphalt. It is also planned to link the cycle path at Bikkjestykket with the route leading to Rundtom. It is uncertain whether it will start in the fall or next year. The connection will be via Hermanstorffs and then CO Lunds gate.
Rundtom - Gyldenløves plass
There is red asphalt on this path today, but it is very worn and is currently being modernized.
Next up is Baker Thoen
- Perhaps in the summer and autumn we will manage to renovate a few more bicycle and pedestrian paths. However, we'll start with these three routes, and Baker Thoens is next in line. There will be cycle paths on both sides of the road between Øvre and Nedre Eiker veg and Professor Smiths alle, the chief engineer concludes.
