“The year that is behind us has been a dark one year for road safety. Too many never got where they were going. The picture of accidents we have had in 2022 is very worrying and a clear reminder that we must continue to put pressure on road safety work, says Transport Minister Jon-Ivar Nygård.
According to preliminary data from the Norwegian Road Administration, 2022 people died on Norwegian roads in 118. This is 38 more than in 2021, when accidents occurred road in Norway 80 people died. – Traveling on Norwegian roads must be safe. But for many, the road was not safe last year. Several people are seriously injured after a road accident and too many have lost their lives. And for all those who died, there were relatives who experienced a great loss. My thoughts go especially to them, says Nygård.
Work is underway to analyze the causes of accidents in 2022. All fatal accidents are reviewed by the Accident Analysis Team of the National Roads Authority.
Work on road safety is continued
The Ministry of Transport is closely monitoring the situation, and systematic work on road safety, which has been carried out for several years, is ongoing.
– Many different entities have been carrying out targeted and effective work in the field of road safety for several decades. We have safer vehicles and more efficient inspections, better rescue and damage management, and investment in the development and improvement of the road network has paid off. In addition, good work has been done on traffic-oriented and attitude-forming traffic safety. We have to help keep that pressure down, says Nygård.
There is still a long way to go to vision zero
The zero vision that no one will be killed or seriously injured in road traffic continues to be the leading star in road safety work in Norway.
“There is still a long way to zero vision. The accident trend in 2022 shows that it is absolutely crucial to maintain focus and road safety efforts. This work will continue in 2023, says Nygård.
