You want safer treatment for children who want to change sex. Insufficient risk knowledge.

In recent decades, there has been a large increase in the number of children and adolescents who want gender reassignment treatment. There is currently insufficient knowledge of the risks, according to the Commission's report.

A new Ukom report now questions whether all of them children and youthwho are not sure of their gender receive appropriate health care. Ukom believes that more transparent management and resources are essential to ensure proper health care and treatment.

The background for the report are the concerns reported directly to Ukom.

Reports reveal concerns about patient safety when treating children and adolescents with gender nonconformity. This applies to both urban and specialist services health service.

More people seek healthcare

In recent decades, there has been an increase in the number of children and young people, especially teenagers, seeking health care due to gender inconsistency. The cause is unknown. Knowledge about the effect and safety of hormonal treatment and surgery in this group of young people is insufficient.

Between 1975 and 1990, there were about four people who opted for such treatment in Norway. Over the last ten years, there has been an increase in referrals from about 50-70 people in 2007-2010 to 400-600 referrals in 2018-2021.

According to Ukom, the health service is not adapted to such growth, and the challenge is the many expectations for health care that are difficult to meet.

“Children and young people are developing and may be vulnerable in the current situation. We make special requirements to ensure patient safety, writes Ukom.
