Transport ministers from many countries met this week in Poland near the Ukrainian border. Support for Ukraine in the field of transport was discussed during the meeting. At a separate meeting with the Ukrainian deputy minister of infrastructure, Nygård also announced that Norway was ready to hand over 12 trainsets.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine resulted in massive loss of life and massive destruction of basic transport infrastructure.

– It is very important that Ukraine rebuilds and develops its transport infrastructure and introduces efficient supply chains, both to maintain critical social functions in the country – and to link a free Ukraine with Europe – says the Minister of Transport.

International Transport Forum in Rzeszów

For two days, he met with colleagues from around 26 countries at a dialogue meeting organized by the International Transport Forum in the Polish city of Rzeszów, about 7 miles from the Ukrainian border. The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandra Azarkhina. During the meeting, the need to support Ukraine in the field of transport in the short and long term was discussed.

Norway previously donated 32 bridges and announced in a separate meeting with Azarkhina on Thursday that we are now ready to hand over 12 trainsets that Ukrainian authorities said were needed.

“Norway supports the legitimate defense struggle of the Ukrainian people and contributes where it can. The possibility of transport is crucial, also not only in a war situation. 12 trainsets are a small but important contribution in this regard, says the Minister of Transport.

Norway will provide 12 type 92 trainsets. They are currently being prepared for operation by Mantena on behalf of the state-owned company Norske tog.
