– The lack of people with the right skills will be one of the biggest bottlenecks in several industries in the future. This may make it difficult to offer good services across the country. That is why it is so important for individuals, companies and society to provide employees with opportunities for professional development, says Sandra Borch, Minister of Research and Higher Education.

The government decided that employees of two new industries will have the opportunity to participate in further education adapted to their daily work.

– There will be an industry program for information security and ICT and for the financial industry. These are industries that require major adjustments. They self-report that many people who have been in the industry for a long time need to update their skills, Borch says.

The goal is to keep more people in the workplace

The industry program aims to provide employees, dismissed employees and the unemployed in industries with a particular need for change to acquire the skills necessary to cope with new tasks and thus stay in their jobs.

In recent years, the financial industry has faced new requirements, including those regarding ecological and sustainable investments. This creates a need for new and updated competences. Information security and ICT affect several sectors. Thanks to this industry program, many people will receive the necessary supplements.

Industry programs are a collaborative effort. The state pays for the maintenance and development of appropriate offers for secondary schools, vocational schools, colleges and universities. Companies and individual employees invest their time.

– The industry program is a good example of practical tripartite cooperation. We see that collaboration means that opportunities are created to develop competencies that would not otherwise exist, and many employees are given the opportunity to acquire skills that they would not otherwise acquire, says Borch.

In spring 2023, the Ministry of Education invited major organizations to submit industries. Ten industries were nominated. Six of them concerned renominations of industries that already had an industry program, and four nominations concerned new industries.
