The city council is now proposing an emergency measure and is increasing Oslo's social assistance rates until 2023, retroactive to July 1.

“It worries me how high prices affect social disparities in our city. We have closely followed how rising prices and expensive times have affected the finances of those who previously had the least. We see that it is necessary to raise social assistance rates in the fall, says Usman Mushtaq, city councilor for work, integration and social services.

“Oslo has become a more expensive city to live in a short time and it hits those who have the least the hardest. That is why we are now taking this extraordinary step to provide for those who need it most in our city, says Sirin Stav, City Councilor for Environment and Transport.

– We level the differences, ensuring that those who previously had the least have more here and now, and this is especially important in the case of families with children – says Sunniva Holmås Eidsvold, city councilor for upbringing and education.

Social assistance rates in Oslo are higher than state rates

Also to ensure that all beneficiaries of social assistance receive a benefit at a reasonable level in relation to the cost of living. In the new rates, families with children and single parents are a priority, so that children and young people living in households benefiting from social assistance experience as few negative consequences related to the family's financial situation as possible.
