As we read on the website of the Oslo municipality, today the official opening of the new headquarters for the emergency room/emergency department (Legevakten) in Aker took place.
After 120 years on Storgata, the emergency room in Oslo was moved to Aker. Today's grand opening on November 22 marked the beginning of a completely new emergency medical service for the city's residents. Oslo Municipality continues good cooperation with Oslo University Hospital (OUS). There, the commune runs a general emergency room, a center for victims of violence and psychosocial services, as well as an emergency room for emergency medical services and a psychiatric emergency room. For residents, this means there is still only one door to the emergency room, no matter what type of health care they need.

– It will be the largest and most modern emergency room in Europe, said the chairman of the city council, Eirik Lae Solberg, during the opening.
– Unlike the emergency room in Storgata, the new building in Aker is larger and adapted to the functioning of modern emergency rooms. It will be much easier to keep good follow-up of patients. Arrangements have been made here so that highly competent healthcare professionals can work in state-of-the-art premises with all the necessary equipment to help the people of Oslo when they need it, says Eirik Lae Solberg
Residents are encouraged to call before arriving
The commune wants to shorten patient waiting times and is taking a number of actions to achieve this.
– In cases where there are no injuries or where health care is urgent, we encourage residents to call before showing up at the emergency room, said Saliba Health Councilor Andreas Korkunc.
– They are then assigned an attendance time and can wait at home until it is their turn. Thanks to the new equipment, it will also be possible to help more people through video consultations, so many people will not have to go to the emergency room at all, says Saliba Andreas Korkunc
The result of good and systematic work
– I am incredibly proud of the municipality's own agencies, which worked well with the contractors and the University Hospital of Oslo, said Eirik Lae Solberg. It was complicated and did not make the work easier because it took place during a pandemic, which is extremely demanding for the health sector. The emergency room is the result of good and systematic cooperation.
