Weather changes, rain and wind may cause difficult road conditions in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark over the next few days. Roads may be closed due to increasing avalanche danger.

Difficult road conditions in northern Norway

– Pay close attention to weather warnings and check the website for traffic reports  vegvesen.no/trafikk – insists the leader of the professional group Håvard Langmo from Vegtrafikksentralen nord.

Icing, snowdrifts, rain and increasing risk of avalanches

On Sunday, the Meteorological Institute issued several danger warnings at both yellow, orange and red levels. There are reports of icy and slippery roads in outer areas of Nordland. Parts of Troms and Finnmark experience heavy snowfall. In addition, there is a significant avalanche risk from Salten in the south to the Finnmark coast in the north.

Mild weather and heavy rainfall, such as rain, is expected from Monday morning on sections Nesna-Narvik and between Svolvær and Hammerfest. The risk of avalanches in several parts of Troms is also expected to increase from significant to high from Monday morning.

– Icy, snowdrifts and freezing rain can cause very difficult road conditions, and avalanche-prone roads may be closed very quickly – warns Langmo.

Be prepared and drive according to the conditions

The Norwegian Public Roads Authority asks road users to obtain information about weather conditions on the route they will be driving.

– Calculate extra time, pay close attention, use appropriate tires and drive carefully. If necessary, consider whether you can postpone your trip until the weather and road conditions improve, advises Langmo.

If you are driving over a mountain pass, make sure you have a fully charged battery or enough fuel in the tank. Take warm clothes, winter boots, food and hot drinks with you. You may have to wait in traffic.

– The authorities and the National Roads Authority are monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis, and the contractors and their teams are prepared.

Na  vegvesen.no/trafikk  you'll find traffic reports, road webcams, and mountain pass conditions and forecasts. In the application Vegvesen road you can also receive notifications about events on both routes and areas.
