The US and Norway are building a satellite station on Andøya: the first such station outside the US

The United States and Norway will cooperate on a temporary satellite station at Andøya Air Base. The satellite station will support space infrastructure in the field of situational awareness, communications for command and control and notification of Norway and NATO, we read in a government press release.

The government has already proposed transforming the Andøya air base into a base for long-range drones. Andøya is an important base and will be crucial for supporting and developing space activities Norwegian Armed Forces.

– I am very pleased that the United States has chosen Norway as its partner in this exciting project. In today's security policy situation, we must unite to defend the entire territory of NATO. The establishment of a satellite station at Andøya Air Base contributes significantly to strengthening the defense capabilities of Norway and NATO. The cooperation is also a very good example of how bilateral it is cooperation between two NATO countries brings benefits to the entire alliance, says Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram.

Space services are crucial to military operations. They are also becoming increasingly important in cooperation with allies, partners and within the NATO community. Safe access to space is becoming crucial with the development of satellite services.

– The government has a clear ambition for Norway to be the main ally in understanding the situation in the north. Satellites help provide an overview of what's happening in our immediate areas, and Andøya is uniquely located when it comes to access to space, says Gram.
