Today the Sun Festival (Solfesten) was celebrated on Rjukan. The pack, together with residents and guests, celebrated the return of the sun after five months of darkness. This is a tradition practiced since 1925, which allows us to enjoy spring and longer days.
Traditional Sun Festival in Rjukan
On this day, parades and processions take place on the streets of Rjukan. People dress up, the sounds of the orchestra flow through the city, and many people gather along the route, both residents of Rjukan and the surrounding area, local people and those who come from far away.
The parade of heralds ends in the square, where the herald announces the program for the day.
There is a Sun Prince or Princess
The Sun Prince/Princess gives a speech to his subjects and announces the orders for the day of his reign.

There is also a Child of the Sun
The Sun Child, i.e. the child born closest to the day the sun returns, is announced. The Sun Child receives many beautiful gifts from the local traders on Rjukan. Among other things, the Child of the Sun (Solbarnet) receives a charming cradle.
Sun Prize
The Sun Prize is awarded in Norway to a person who "by their actions and attitude has contributed to spreading sunshine and joy among the Norwegian people." Among award winners Suns can be mentioned: Wenche Foss, Odd Børrezen, Anne-Cath. Vestly, Nils Arne Eggen, Kjell Aukrust, Wenche Myhre, Øystein Sunde, Erik Bye and Jo Nesbø.
Best Costume
The best costumes are selected and prizes are awarded to both individuals and groups. During the day you can participate in various events, and in the evening there are dances and fun in various places in Rjukan.
