50 million to live in a city without a car

Coming soon to Oslo, more summer-closed streets and more playgrounds in 2023.

“The summer opening of Gata Grønland was a great success last summer and shows that even simpler means can achieve urban living in a short time. It is also important to transform street car parks into meeting and play areas, for example with garden furniture, plants and a paradise. Street by street, we are creating a better and greener city that is safer and more accessible to people of all ages, not just children and young people, says City Councilor for Environment and Transportation Sirin Hellvin Stav (MDG).

These are the streets that will open to restaurants, housing, trees and people in 2023:

  • Gata Greenland
  • Torshovgata
  • Sondrgate
  • Ankerbrua
  • Work begins on turning Kirkegat into a permanent pedestrian street. Initial design is initialized.

Playgrounds and activity areas

More street art, murals, more playgrounds and activity areas for children, benches, trees and greenery. This will be prioritized throughout the car-free urban living area.

– A city that is good for children is good for everyone. Myntgata 2, Chr. Fredriks plass and Kirsebærlunden are three good examples of places where we have created playgrounds that were an immediate success. Now I can't wait to get started construction of even more squares games next year, says city councilor for urban development Hanna E. Marcussen (MDG).

A city for children

  • The parking lot at the old Munch Museum will be converted into a basketball court
  • A thorough modernization of the playground on Langkaia
  • Modernization of the activity area with plantings, playground equipment and loungers at Havnepromenaden on Akershusstranda/Festningskaia
  • Pop-up trampoline park with seating and greenery in one or more places
  • Renovation of Håkonsgate playground (started, completed 2023)
