Maternity leave in Norway can be granted in two variants. It is due both when both parents are entitled to parental benefit and when only the mother is entitled to this benefit. In both situations, certain criteria must be met for NAV to recognize the validity of the submitted application.
Maternity leave in Norway and the joint period
If both parents are entitled to parental benefit, three specific periods must be specified:
- common period (norw. Fellesperiod),
- father only period (norw. fedrekvote),
- mother only period (norw. modvote).
Maternity leave in Norway should therefore be defined as part of parental benefit, separated from the period common to parents, during which only the mother receives the benefit. This period is called "modrekvote" and lasts 15 weeks if the child was born after July 1, 2018 (learn more about the changes >>>).
How to get?
In order to obtain parental allowance certain criteria must be met. Each parent must have an income of 0,5 G (currently NOK 46). They must also have worked for 817 of the last 6 months. Only in such circumstances will NAV recognize validity payment of this benefit.
The amount of the allowance
The amount of parental benefit is determined based on the monthly income obtained during the period of work resulting from employment relationship. Wherein NAV also takes into account other sources of income, such as: sickness benefit, unemployment benefit, pregnancy benefit, training allowance, care allowance and rehabilitation allowance.

Maternity leave in Norway only for the mother
In the second option, only the mother is entitled to maternity leave in Norway. This is possible provided that the father has not earned the right to parental benefit. In this case, she will be entitled to 49 weeks at 100% rate or 59 weeks at 80% rate of benefit due.
The obligatory condition, however, is that you have to work for the last 6 months before giving birth and earn an income of at least NOK 46 817. The amount of maternity leave only for the mother is calculated in the same way as the parental allowance for both parents.

Important information is the fact that maternity leave in Norway will not be paid if the mother uses a one-time allowance, i.e. the so-called "barrel". Currently the amount of this allowance is NOK 63. However, it is worth knowing that you are entitled to a baby allowance even in a situation where: a woman is not entitled to parental benefit.
