There has been a lot of talk recently about the positive effects of renewable energy sources. We also wrote on our pages about the need to introduce ecological solutions, both in the Norwegian economy and in our everyday lives. The latest research confirms that focusing on solar energy and the so-called "green economy" can contribute to improving contacts and relations between the authorities of individual countries. Why? Well, renewable energy sources mean emphasis on cooperation. The oil and gas industry has been a flashpoint of conflict for centuries. Is the time of peace really coming?
– countries won, countries lost
Green economy has an impact on modifying power relations and tensions between countries of the world, as well as on geopolitics as a whole. Experts divide the world into winning and losing countries. In countries where oil industry plays first fiddle, it will be difficult to avoid tensions. Winner countries that have been investing in for a long time renewable energy they will cope without any problems and will constantly develop. Two issues are key here - the level of the oil industry, but also the reserve resources of a given country.
Let the scientists speak ...
Indra Øverland – NUPI researcher (Norwegian Institute The researcher presents this situation as follows.
“The geopolitical drama is related to the decline of fossil fuels, not the rise of renewable energy. Significant turbulence may occur here. This could hit countries that are industrially strong and those that have traditionally received a lot of external aid because of their own energy resources (…). A country like Algeria may be weakened when fossil fuel exports decline, but at the same time this weakening can be counteracted because the country has solid solar energy resources. However, for countries like Russia and Saudi Arabia that take advantage significant income from oil and gas to finance their armies and engage in armed conflicts with neighboring countries, the "green change" may be very difficult.
What about Norway?
Renewable energy sources - an opportunity for the world. Where does Norway fall in this analysis? Its position is "neutral" at the moment. On the one hand, it looks at renewable energy sources, on the other hand, it still generates large profits from oil and gas. We are mainly talking about exports here. Population Norwegian is small so the profits from export can be safely shared.
